i think that expectations are probably working a little bit against us and more for mitt romney right now. at the end of the day, i think that the winner is going to be declared by the american people based on what these two candidates say and who lays out a vision for the future. some specifics and policy details. the president has been having this conversation with the american people for some time. this is what we spent our convention doing, laying out where we've been as a country, the values that drive the president, where he wants to go in the future. i think what's been missing with mitt romney is exactly that, those details, those policies of where he wants to take this country. i think tonight offers an opportunity for him to fill some of that in. >> if you listen to his surrogates, they'll say and he's going to take that opportunity. if you look at, for example, cnn's poll of polls, you see the race tightening a little bit with president obama at 49% for likely voters choice for president and romney at 46%. last cnn polling before this poll came out had the president up by s

"politicsnation" with al sharpton starts right now. >>> thanks, chris. and thanks to you for tuning in. tonight's lead, fight night in denver. in just under three hours, president obama and governor romney will meet on the stage at the university of colorado in their first debate where tens and millions of americans watching at home. the debate will showcase two competing visions for america, two conflicting views of government, a clash of ideas about the kind of democracy we want. it could hardly be a more stark choice for the country. but this is also personal it's about two men and who are and how they will connect with the american people. no doubt about it, this is a big night. join me now, cynthia tucker and erin mcpike who covers the campaign for real clear politics. thank you both for coming on the show. >> thank you. >> thanks for having me. >> erin, let me go to you first. mitt romney is behind. what does he need to cover up? what does he need to do tonight? >> he needs to show, especially middle class voters, that he has a plan. we've already

i have talked to several of my right wing friends who when romney's tape came out said i wish romney talked like this more often. they are able to say this because they never lived on government assistance. they have lived on corporate welfare, but they don't see that as the same thing. for people who have lived on government assistance, it can be a soul-crushing thing. for instance, unemployment. i've been on unemployment. other people on unemployment know that it's just kind of a debilitating feeling to know you're not contributing at that moment. and the idea that that's your preferred state of being just shows the lack of understanding that people like romney and ryan have for people who are in that situation. anybody would rather have a meaningful and well-paying job that enables them to provide for their family rather than feeling like they are some type of leech. it's doubly insulting when they are then told on this national stage, hey, you're in a rough time in your life. not only are you in a rough time, but you're a leech on society. >> the phrasing, they are not exact para

right now on facebook, we are asking what topics you hope the president and mitt romney will be talking about tomorrow night, but tonya writes health care and social security. she's not the only one. chris writes passing a budget. the lack after budget is costing this country way too much. i would also like to see their plans on creating jobs. it should be a plan that increases manufacturing within all states. we want to hear from you, too. so go to the wusa 9 facebook page and tell us what you want to hear tomorrow night. you can watch the debate live on wusa 9. get to our website where we will be fact checking what the candidates say. then join us for a wrap-up of the debate at 11:00. >>> vice-president joe biden says the middle class has been buried for the last four years. the republicans couldn't agree more. during a campaign stop in charlotte, the v.p. criticized mitt romney for proposing policies that biden said would cut taxes for millionaires and raise them for middle class families. >> this is deadly earnest. how they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes in the midd
